Linwood – Windshield Survey

Linwood – Windshield Survey

Lafayette, Georgia

To mitigate a housing development in the area of a former mill village known as “Linwood,” a windshield survey was undertaken to determine if there was potential for a mill village historic district, or districts to be created The windshield survey area was based on the Area of Potential Effect for the proposed housing development. As a result of the windshield survey, architectural building types were enumerated and two potential historic districts were identified.

HISTORY:

The Linwood Mill Village Historic District includes the former town which was the original mill village for the Union Cotton Mills. This historic district retains a particularly high level of historic integrity with many mill houses, former community store buildings, and a mill-built church. It was the independent town of Linwood until it was incorporated into Lafayette, Georgia, in 1992.

Although developed around the same time, the Henderson Street Historic District was developed incrementally by individuals rather than a single entity. Historic houses are scattered throughout the small neighborhood mixed with ranch house (dating to the 1970s) and public housing (dating to 1972 and 2001) infill.

OUR ROLE:

Using sources such as historic maps and aerial photos, Ray, Ellis & LaBrie Consulting conducted a parcel-by-parcel windshield survey in August 2018. During the survey additional information was gathered from local residents, and local repositories. Two potential historic districts were identified: Linwood Mill Village Historic District and Henderson Street Historic District. Historic integrity was evaluated for these two areas as well.
