Atlanta, Georgia
Located at 2160 Monroe Drive and visible from the Northeast Expressway (now I-85), this unique round bank building was targeted for redevelopment as a self-storage complex in 2016. The owners, however, decided to pursue the donation of a preservation easement on the property after significant community support for the building was evident. To accomplish this they were required to list the property on the National Register of Historic Places.
HISTORY:
Located adjacent to the Northeast Expressway in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood, this iconic round building was designed by famed architect Henri Jova in 1962 as a branch bank for the Trust Company of Georgia. Following SunTrust bank’s closure in 2000, the building served as a restaurant and later a daiquiri bar.
OUR ROLE:
Ray, Ellis & LaBrie Consulting (REL) prepared the National Register nomination so that the client could donate a façade easement. The project included a context study, adaption of boundaries, photographic documentation, as well as all required forms for the State of Georgia Historic Preservation Division and the National Park Service.
